In the reedited version of 2666 by Alfaguara (2016), in the appendix there is an annotation stating the following: “2666 -a non-science fiction novel-”. This article intends to examine the novel from the perspective of science fiction and explore the connections that Roberto Bolaño´s latest work has with this popular subgenre. After an examination of this genre´s repercussions throughout his Chilean literary career, the symbolic meaning contained in this enigmatic number as a title is analyzed to find parallels between Bolaño´s masterpiece and George Orwell´s 1984 or Stanley Kubrick´s film 2001.
