Chileans in Spain. XIXth Century

Abstract

This is the first part of a study on the presence and activity of Chilean writers in Madrid from the nineteenth century to the Spanish Civil War, which led to a pause in normal relations between the two countries. The second part Will refer to the first 36 years of the twentieth century.
The reestablishment of cultural relations with Spain, which had been broken after Chile 's Independence, is a very gradual process which spans the second half of the nineteenth century. The first contacts were made by a group of exiled poets and historians who stayed for varying periods in Spain. Subsequent diplomatic missions led to stronger cultural ties, owing to the arrival of such an important figure as José Toribio Medina and, later, of the writer Luis Orrego Luco. Both became fully integrated in the world ofSpanish culture and prepared the foundations for a relationship which Will become far more intense in the twentieth century.
